Natural Remedies for Dementia

Improve Brain Memory

Namaste.                         Natural Remedies for Dementia

My family, my Mothers friends, and i, have all become concerned about her memory getting worse over recent years. Although i have tried on a few occasions previously to get her to include in her diet some natural remedies for memory improvement such as spirulina, coconut oil and turmeric, up until now she was reluctant to do so, claiming that her memory was fine.

However, following a recent doctor's diagnosis of early onset dementia, i am very pleased that Mum is now at least opening up to these natural alternatives to the toxic pharmaceuticals which the doctors offer. Perhaps soon, we will be able to answer the frequently asked question;

Can Dementia be Reversed?

Over the last five years I have spent a huge amout of time researching and trying different natural healing modalities. In late 2012 i opened The Sanctuary Healing Center in Mexico to help share these, with some wonderful results. Now (May 2014), due to Mum's condition and her willingess to learn more, i decided it's time for some more specific research on how to improve brain memory and for the care of dementia patients.

While researching natural remedies for dementia, i decided to create this page to share the information with others. This page therefore is a summary of information including some of the best natural remedies for dementure i have learned over the last few years and in more recent days.

I will start with Turmeric, Coconut Oil & MMS which i know best, as i and many others have already been using them at The Sanctuary. Rather than re-write what has already been done very well, in a lot of cases i will share links to further information so you can look deeper where you wish to.

Turmeric is one of the most commonly used and widespread spices used in Ayurvedic medicine. The use of this plant can be traced to 10,000 years ago in India alone where it’s known as “The Earthy herb of the Sun”, and it’s also known that it’s been used for centuries in Chinese and Polynesian cultures for medicinal uses. The fact that people in India eat it in almost every meal is really significant.

An excellent article on Natural News gives information about multiple case studies showing that Turmeric produces mind-blowing recovery from dementia symptoms.

"The chief physician at Kariya Toyota General Hospital in Kariya City and his colleagues evaluated three separate case studies involving turmeric;

"In a study involving three patients with Alzheimer's Disease, whose cognitive decline and Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia were severe, exhibiting irritability, agitation, anxiety, and apathy, supplementation with turmeric powder capsules for over one year was found to be associated with improvement in symptoms," wrote the authors of the study in their summary. Taking as little as one gram, or roughly one-quarter of a teaspoon, of turmeric powder or extract daily, it turns out, is enough to produce these mind-blowing improvements in dementia symptoms."

Another article states:  "According to research, the active ingredient in the Indian spice turmeric may delay or even prevent memory problems if you're unlucky enough to get Alzheimer's disease."

Is it luck though that gives us memory loss, alzheimer and dementia ? We can choose whether or not to eat processed foods laden with toxic chemicals and we can choose to go to a traditional dentist who carries out unsafe traditional root canal treatment and uses metal and plastic material which leech toxins into the body. Other memory loss causes can be drinking tap water shown in the UK to contain over 300 man made chemicals, or following the advice of western medicine doctors (drug dealers? ;-) which invariably lead to side effecs like dementia after taking pharmaceuticals over many years. Alternatively we can (now we have access to so much information on the internet), make informed decisions and perhaps choose to add turmeric, coconut oil, spirulina and more to our daily diet, thereby protecting us from and reversing many of the issues that the former can cause!

Coconut oil, like Turmeric is renowned in the natural health field as an exceptional healing agent. An article on lists 13 evidence based medicinal properties of coconut oil including Fat-Burning, Anti-Ulcer, Anti-Fungal, and the relavant one here being Brain-Boosting.

In one 2006 study, consumption of medium chain triglycerides (which are found in coconut oil) lead to an immediate improvement in brain function in patients with milder forms of Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Mary Newport M.D. wrote a book entitled "Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Were a Cure — The Story of Ketones" which is effectively an extended case study of her husband and a testemonial for the use of coconut oil.

Will you find so called scientific evidence for coconut oil with double or triple blind studies which supposedly provide proof to the medical industry? No! With these studies costing many millions to fund, and no likelihood of being able to patent and therefore make huge amounts of money as with pharmaceuticals, funding for such a study is unlikely. For me however, the overwhelming anecdotal evidence like in this article by Alison Birks is enough. Once again, we all get to choose :-)

How much should I take?

Dr. Newport's Personal Treatment for Her Husband: (The following is not medical advice. Be sure to consult your physician before trying this yourself).

  1. Start by using one teaspoon of coconut oil in each meal.
  2. If available, us a mixture of 1/2 coconut oil and 1/2 MCT oil.
  3. Increase the amount gradually, protecting against side effects.
  4. Try for 3 tablespoons per meal & 2 tablespoons at bedtime.

The video below is of Dr. Mary Newport talking about this.

From an article by PF Lewis on; "Let's not forget the role of pure cold-pressed virgin coconut oil for avoiding or reversing dementia. It's been empirically demonstrated to reverse even late stage Alzheimer's."

Cacao and Spirulina - Natural Remedies for Dementia

Spirulina Bread

Two more natural remedies for dementia are Spirulina and Cacao (Cocoa). Some evidence suggests that these two complement each other when taken together.

Spirulina, often referred to as blue-green algae is one of the world's richest sources of protein with over 60% of it's dry weight being protein and is also a good source vitamins for dementia improvement as well as minerals, carotenoids and essential fatty acids.

The benefits of Spirulina are too many for me to research and list here when this has already been done by many. Read this article about the remarkable benefits of consuming Spirulina on a daily basis, as alternative treatments for dementia and many other health conditions. It also includes some great recipes including the Spirulina bread pictured left. Also check out this page for Superhero Spirulina Cookies :-)

According to Johathan Landsman in this article about the benefits of Spirulina; "Ideally, you must take 1-2 tablespoons per day, but you can take more during illness or pregnancy."

Raw Cacao (Cocoa)                                                    Natural Remedies for Dementia - Natural Remedies for Dementia

"There have been many studies linking cocoa and dark chocolate with health benefits. Cocoa and chocolate contain a large amount of antioxidants (flavinoids). Cocoa and dark chocolate may keep high blood pressure down and reduce the blood's ability to clot, thus the risk of stroke and heart attacks may be reduced. The darker chocolate with the most concentrated cocoa will be the most beneficial." - Read more Cacao facts at

The folowing two pages talk about the potential benefits of taking spirulina and high-flavanol cocoa powder together.

"If you're consuming both cocoa powder and spirulina, you may consider how it could protect you from diminishing memory, cognitive decline and other forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer's, as you age. And that's not all. The positive cardiovascular effects of these two superfoods are also substantial." - High-flavanol cocoa powder and spirulina could prevent senile dementia

Potential complementarity of high-flavanol cocoa powder and spirulina for health protection

MMS, alternative treatments for dementia.

In 2012 i attended a 5 day training course on the use of MMS (Sodium Chlorite Solution activated with an acid). MMS (best used in my opinion as part of a natural healing protocol - as opposed to on it's own) is claimed to be able to cure 95% of all disease. I have personally witessed, both on myself and others, and received trusted reports from others, of the successful use of MMS for burns, HIV, staph infection, parasites, meningitis, severe sinus infection, skin cancer and much more. This page on the Genesis II Church of Health & Healing website offers many anecdotal testemoniaals.

Below is a video of me talking about what MMS does, and some testemonials for the use of MMS for dementia and alzheimers

There are many more alternative treatmets for alzheimer dementia and memory loss including colon cleansing (including enema), clay baths, drinking clay, urine therapy, walnuts, green tea, ayurvedic herbs such as brahmi, bacopa and gotu kola, along with ginko biloba and essential emotional work such as Radical Forgiveness

This page will be updated to include some of the above and more from time to time as i research more natural remedies for dementia. Please feel free to comment, ask questions or even add your own natural remedies for dementia in the comment section below.

Sage is a legendary herb, one of many natural remedies for dementia, which is well known for its phenomenal health promoting and disease preventing properties. It is one of the top antioxidants herbs and can provide powerful protection from degenerative diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, prostatitis, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Sage contains rosmarinic acid which is a potent anti-inflammatory compound that can help reduce swelling and inflammation and considered highly beneficial for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, bursitis, asthma, and atherosclerosis.

Sage has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties and is an excellent natural remedy for fungal, viral, and bacterial infections. It also has the ability to provide relief from acidity and aid in digestion of fatty and hard to digest foods.

Sage is known as the “thinker’s herb” as has an outstanding ability to enhance attention span, support concentration, and improve the senses as well as provide support when dealing with grief and depression. It can also help regulate the menstrual cycle and help to prevent excessive sweating in woman after menopause. Sage has the ability to neutralize free radicals and offer significant anti-aging and longevity benefits. Sage also contains antiseptic properties and is widely found in natural creams, lotions, and salves to speed the healing of cuts and wounds and clear up most skin diseases and infections.

On a spiritual level, sage has long been used to aid in cleansing one’s spirit and surroundings. Sage has a peppery flavor and can be added to soups, potatoes, squash, tomato sauce, salads, guacamole, and even works well with some fruits like strawberries and banana smoothies. Sage can also be taken as a tea, capsule, or tincture for additional benefits. Sage is a wise, healing, and powerful herb that is a true gift and should not be missed.

The Sanctuary Healing Center - Care of Dementia Patients

Before creating this page i did a little research for the best keyword to use for the page title and main keyword. The following is a selection of just a few frequently searched for keywords (or keyphrases) i found:

"dementia life expectancy, art therapy and dementia, nursing care plan for dementia, in home dementia care, care homes for dementia, ginko biloba and dementia, dementia nursing homes, dementia articles, caregiving for dementia, dementia assisted living, dementia guide"

It is clear to me that many thousands of people search each month for care such as we could potentially offer at The Sanctuary.

My intention is in the near future to offer a protocol for care of dementia patients and those experiencing memory loss to reverse their condition and return to full health. If this is something of interest to you, please write with details of the current condition of the person who might benefit from this service. I and the healing team at The Sanctuary will do our very best to assist.

Peace & Love

Pete Adams, founder of The Sanctuary
